Distribution Center Assistant Manager (Ipswich, MA)
United Pipe & Steel, a member of the Reliance Inc. family of companies, is a leading master distributor of standard pipe products in the United States, serving wholesale distributors only from our fleet of flatbed trucks. We are seeking an Assistant Distribution Center Manager to join our Ipswich, MA team!
Job Overview
Reporting directly to the DC Manager, the Assistant Manager will be the primary backup responsible for the day-to-day operations, with a focus on safety, quality, inventory control, and efficiency. The ideal candidate will meet or exceed all KPIs, lead and develop the warehouse team, and provide impeccable customer service to our customers. The DC Manager and Assistant Manager will collaborate to ensure all warehouse and administrative assignments are covered efficiently. The Assistant Manager has decision-making authority as delegated by the DC Manager.
Responsibilities and Job Duties:
Management
- Supervise daily operations in a fast-paced and continuously changing distribution warehouse environment.
- Ensure the warehouse operates at peak efficiency, with safety being the primary goal, by supporting a safe work environment by following safety rules and regulations and reporting all safety hazards.
- Develop the warehouse team to solve day-to-day operational issues and reach short- and long-term performance goals.
- Maintain a safe and healthy work environment by establishing, following, and enforcing standards and procedures and complying with California legal regulations.
- Perform daily equipment, safety, and building inspections, and oversees general maintenance as needed. Makes recommendations for improvements to procedures or equipment.
- Promote a positive team environment and increase employee engagement by leading by example while motivating and mentoring others.
- Confers with the Manager to ensure coordination of warehouse activities. Interfaces and communicates with the sales team and customers regarding service.
- Resolve and troubleshoot escalated customer service issues.
- Quality check of all outbound shipments.
- Demonstrate a strong work ethic while maintaining a sense of urgency to complete tasks and accomplish goals set by leadership.
- Be able to communicate effectively with fellow employees with courtesy and respect.
- Manages and maintains good human resources practices and adherence to corporate and department policies and procedures.
- Working knowledge of computers and programs specific to operations reporting, including MS Office.
- Assume all other duties as assigned.
Inventory
- Monitor inbound warehouse inventory and the flow of products to the processors.
- Oversee trafficking, customer callouts, and delivery logs.
- Monitor the loading and unloading of all materials, reporting defective or damaged items.
- Ensure DC is maintained per the strategic inventory management plan.
- Execute Cycle Count program and annual physical inventory.
Transportation
- Coordinate in/outbound shipments and oversee the loading of outgoing shipments while minimizing or preventing all inventory discrepancies.
- Ensure equipment is maintained to DOT and Driver satisfaction.
- Check the safety and configuration of all loads before they leave the facility to ensure DOT compliance.
- Ability to handle changing priorities and use good judgment in stressful situations.
Requirements and qualifications:
- 3+ years’ experience managing warehouse associates, specifically experience working in a distribution warehouse environment or with flatbed trucks preferred.
- Previous sit-down forklift experience/forklift trainer experience is a big plus.
- Must be able to stand/walk for up to 8-10 hours daily.
- This is a physical position, involving heavy lifting, bending, and stretching.
- Bilingual English/Spanish preferred.
- Must be able to pass a background check and drug test.

- Knowledge of distribution center processes, practices, and tools.
- Strong organizational and time management skills, and ability to prioritize.
- Excellent communication and people skills, collaborating with multicultural staff and other departments.
- Strong critical thinking skills and analytical abilities.
