Understanding Steel Pipe Sizes and Schedules
Nominal Pipe Size (NPS)
Nominal Pipe Size is a standard naming system. NPS does not equal the actual outside diameter, which allows fittings to remain consistent across schedules.
Outside Diameter and Schedule
Outside diameter stays the same for a given NPS. As schedule increases, wall thickness increases and inside diameter decreases.
What Pipe Schedule Means
Pipe schedule is the standard designation that defines wall thickness for a given nominal pipe size. As schedule increases, wall thickness increases while outside diameter remains constant.
Schedule 40 vs Schedule 80
Schedule 40 is common for structural and low‑pressure use. Schedule 80 has a thicker wall and higher weight per foot for higher pressure applications.
Why Weight per Foot Matters
Weight per foot affects freight cost, handling, and branch storage. Comparing weights helps distributors estimate landed cost and plan mixed loads.
Manufacturer and Standards References
Industry specifications and manufacturer documentation support pipe schedule definitions.
