Pipe Weight Calculator for Steel Pipe

Use this pipe weight calculator to find steel pipe weight per foot, weight per piece, and total weight for an order. Pick a size and schedule, or enter any outside diameter and wall thickness.

This calculator needs JavaScript. Use the formula below to calculate pipe weight by hand.

Weights are theoretical for black plain-end carbon steel pipe. Galvanizing, threading, and couplings add weight, and actual weight varies by mill. Refer to the mill test report for exact figures.

Pipe Weight Calculator Formula

The calculation of pipe weight for plain-end carbon steel pipe is: weight per foot (lb/ft) = 10.69 × (OD − wall) × wall, with OD and wall thickness in inches. Pipe sizes and wall thicknesses follow ASME B36.10.

For example, 2″ Schedule 40 pipe has a 2.375″ OD and a 0.154″ wall: 10.69 × (2.375 − 0.154) × 0.154 = about 3.66 lb/ft. A 21′ length weighs about 76.9 lb.

When calculating weight of pipe for an order, multiply by length and number of pieces to estimate bundle or load weight. This helps with freight, handling, and planning mixed loads.

Steel Pipe Weight per Foot by Schedule

Schedule sets the wall thickness, so weight per foot rises with each schedule at the same size. This calculator covers Schedule 10, 40, and 80. For example, 4″ pipe weighs 5.62 lb/ft in Schedule 10, 10.80 lb/ft in Schedule 40, and 15.00 lb/ft in Schedule 80. See the steel pipe size chart for full dimensions.

Pipe Weight Calculator FAQ

How do you calculate the weight of a steel pipe?

Multiply 10.69 by (OD − wall) and by the wall thickness to get pounds per foot, then multiply by the length. The calculator above handles the weight calculation for pipe in any size.

How much does Schedule 40 pipe weigh?

It depends on the size. 2″ Schedule 40 weighs 3.66 lb/ft, 4″ weighs 10.80 lb/ft, and 6″ weighs 18.99 lb/ft. The pipe size chart lists more sizes.

Can I use this calculator for other materials?

No. It uses the carbon steel formula, so it is not for stainless, aluminum, or plastic pipe.

Does the weight include galvanizing, threads, or couplings?

No. Those add weight. Refer to the mill test report for actual weight.
