Seamless vs. Welded Carbon Steel Pipe

Welded product is formed from flat strip and joined along a seam, either by continuous weld (CW, ASTM A53 Type F) or electric resistance weld (ERW, ASTM A53 Type E). Seamless is made from a solid billet with no weld seam, so it is typically specified for high-pressure, high-temperature and process applications. For plumbing, fire protection, mechanical and general structural work, welded is the more common and economical choice.

Black, Galvanized and Grooved Finishes

Black is standard for gas, fire sprinkler, steam and general mechanical lines. Galvanized has a zinc coating for corrosion resistance and is common in outdoor and exposed applications. Depending on the product line, ends are available plain, threaded and coupled, threaded both ends, roll grooved and beveled.

ASTM A53, A106 and A135 Carbon Steel Pipe Standards

Most of what we stock is made to ASTM A53, which covers black and galvanized welded and seamless product in Grades A and B. ASTM A106 Grade B covers seamless carbon product for high-temperature service. ASTM A135 covers ERW, including the Schedule 10 lightwall we stock for fire sprinkler systems. For details on CW product, see our ASTM A53 Grade B Type F FAQ. See our ASTM A53 pipe guide for types, grades, and how A53 compares with A106.
